Romanesque or Gothic?
The Basilica of Evron wavers between the two styles, and it is perhaps this mingling of genres that gives it its charm.
The abbey church of Evron is a jewel of medieval architecture.
It has retained its 11th-century square tower, reminiscent of a medieval fortress, its amazing crypt and its sturdy, stocky nave.
The choir, however, built in the 13th century, proclaims the arrival of the Gothic style.
The Basilica keeps a treasury whose showpiece is an oak statue of Our Lady, covered with silver leaf.
The Basilica is Mayenne’s most important religious building.

The Legend of Notre Dame de l’Epine (Our Lady of the Thorn)
This legend dates from the 7th century: a pilgrim on his way back from Jerusalem with a holy relic witnessed some extraordinary happenings. This miracle gave rise to the establishment of a monastery.
At the end of the 10th century the monks of Evron began building a huge Romanesque church which it would take them several decades to finish.
A century later, a noble on his way back from St Jacques de Compostelle had a chapel built beside this church. Inspired by a Spanish mosque, he had his building decorated with Byzantine-Arabic motifs. This is known as the Chapel of Saint Crespin.
The Gothic part dates from the 13th century, when the monks of Evron decided to endow the abbey with a new church.

Festival of Religious Art
